FISHLORD is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, and producer from Maryland currently residing in New York. Born to Trinidadian parents, his eclectic music reflects his upbringing and identity as a first-generation immigrant.
Growing up, the hardcore and metal scene always helped him express his feelings and shake off the expectations that come with being a third-culture kid. Now, it’s his turn to make some noise.
FISHLORD released music for several years under the moniker Nafets, a project that garnered over 8 million streams on Spotify and sync placements with The CW, Netflix, BET+, Hulu, and more.
In late 2023, he changed his name to FISHLORD — a pivot towards his roots of nu-metal, punk, and rock. His debut EP, “YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TREAT YOUR DOGS LIKE PEOPLE”, takes the best elements from early 2000s rock and incorporates fresh and contemporary energy grounded in his West Indian identity.
You look like you treat your dogs like people
YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TREAT YOUR DOGS LIKE PEOPLE is a uniquely unruly collection of tracks. The 8-track EP was recorded and produced entirely by FISHLORD himself over the course of a year, and spans a wide range of influences from System of a Down, to Earl Sweatshirt, Zulu, and Mitski.
The EP title and track lyrics detail FISHLORD’s experiences as a first-generation immigrant striving to be in spaces that would make his parents proud, only to realize the dehumanizing effect that these institutions can have, especially on people of color, and the sacrifice that comes with class mobility, bi-culturalism, and respectability politics.
The EP release has been supported with over a dozen shows at venues including Public Records, Purgatory, Trans-Pecos, Songbyrd DC, Ki Smith Gallery, Our Wicked Lady, and more.

The vision
Hardcore has always been a scene for people to rebel against the status quo, challenge taboos, and express themselves fully. But for too long, artists of color have been left out of these spaces, despite having a tremendous impact on their creation.
FISHLORD aims to continue the work of bands like Bad Brains, Buggin, Zulu, Basement 5, and others: opening up the hardcore space to be a place for artists of color, Black artists, and first-generation artists to thrive and freely express themselves and showing other first-generation kids what it means to fight against the expectations of their world, follow their artistic dreams, and forge their path.
